If there are no tracks to be seen, not even from whenever this gate was built in the first place, somebody must've intentionally smudged them. Chances are that the "thin layer of regolith dust" is a result of that, rather than having accumulated over "a couple centuries" ...
(Or were the builders so paranoid and used to hiding their presence that they had their construction machinery hover to and fro on antigravs, just to keep the surrounding surface features in pristine condition ... ? There was no mention of the expedition seeing sites where the removed material from excavating the tunnels has been deposited, either ...)
